THE NUMBER 12
The number 12 symbolizes what is completed, sometimes we speak of a perfect figure.
It can be interpreted as both the end of a cycle or a point of harmony.
Positive or negative, it is omnipresent in all areas of our culture.
In the measures
This number is a strong reference point, which allows us, among other things, to
situate ourselves in time. Our time system is based on twelve hours. Each day
is divided into two equal parts, one ending at noon, and the other at midnight.
The duodecimal system is also used to divide a year into twelve months.
This number is also, but increasingly rarely used in the measurement system.
We are talking about a dozen eggs. The employment of the dozen undoubtedly goes
back to the fact that the year counts twelve lunations: the Moon rotate approximatively twelve
times around the turn of the Earth in one year.
In the major religions
The number is founder in the three major religions. He appears many times in
the Bible. In particular, let us mention the twelve apostles who accompanied
Jesus in the Gospel. In the Old Testament, Jacob had twelve sons who gave birth
to the twelve tribes of Israel. The figure is also a strong symbol in a branch of
the Muslim religion: Twelver Shiism, which believes in the existence of twelve
imams, successors of Muhammad SAW.
In mythology
In Greek mythology, the divine couple, Gaïa and Ouranos, gave birth to twelve
Titans, and the hero Herakles will have to carry out twelve works/tasks including,
for example, the descent into hell to fetch Eurydice
